Biblical Fiction Roundup Day 5: Same Story, New Setting

My favorite kind of Biblical fiction is when an author takes story from the Bible and puts it in a new setting. Check some of these out for fresh perspectives on old stories!

Liz Curtis Higgs has set several Bible stories in eighteenth-century Scotland. If you’re a fan of historical fiction or highlanders you won’t want to miss these!

R. J. Larson has incorporated several Old Testament stories into a Fantasy setting with her Books of the Infinite. I love these books! You can read my previous posts about this author here. (R.J. Larson is really Kacy Barnett-Gramckow and has written more traditional, but still fabulous Biblical fiction previously.)

Krista McGee writes Christian teen fiction. First Date is the story of Esther retold as a dating competition in modern-day america. The winner gets to go on a date with the President’s son! McGee also wrote a dystopian series so she’s a good recommend for teens.

Kate Breslin is a newer author. For Such a Time is the story of Esther set during WWII. Hadassah is a secretary to a German SS officer. Yes, this is another one about Esther, but it’s worth your time. Another must-read if you like historical fiction.

Lynne Gentry has written the Biblical fiction version of Outlander! In Healer of Carthage Dr. Lisbeth Hastings falls through a time portal in an archaeology dig and finds herself in the middle of a slave auction in 3rd Century Carthage. I’ve got this one in my to-read pile right now, (Spoiler Alert) I believe that there’s a romance and maybe a child… See! Outlander!

Of course, I can’t forget to mention Francine Rivers. Redeeming Love is the story of Gomer and Hosea, set during the California Gold Rush. Classic Biblical fiction, classic Inspirational fiction, if you haven’t read this one yet you should go read it right now. Seriously. Right now!
